Treating dental problems

Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment treats infection or inflammation of the soft tissue (pulp) inside a tooth. It is often used to try to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed.

This page describes a common dental treatment. Please contact the clinic to confirm whether it is available and suitable for you.

About this treatment

The dentist numbs the tooth, makes a small opening, removes the affected pulp, then cleans and shapes the canals inside the root before sealing them. Treatment may take more than one visit.

Afterwards the tooth is usually restored with a filling or a crown to protect it. Your dentist will explain whether root canal treatment is suitable for your tooth and what the alternatives are.

When to see a dentist

You may want to book a visit if:

  • You have a persistent or throbbing toothache
  • A tooth stays sensitive long after hot or cold food and drink
  • There is swelling or tenderness in the gum near a tooth
  • A tooth has darkened after an injury

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a substitute for professional dental advice. A dentist will examine you and explain the options that suit your situation. If you have severe pain, swelling or an injury, seek urgent care.
